One of the main objectives in relation to the Internet is for it to “fly” within the home even if we have all connected at the same time. Important steps have already been taken with fiber where speeds of 100 Megabits per second are being offered. It is precisely in this evolution that a novelty appears: a plastic fiber.

Let’s put ourselves in the situation. Glass fiber optics are too expensive for home use and unwieldy. That is why it is usually installed from the central to the door. Inside the home, there is either copper cable or WiFi, which give good transmission quality, but needs to continue improving. The plastic fiber optic, which can be installed inside the home, allows maintaining and even increase the speed and display “extremely high definition” content. Plastic fiber is also much more manageable than glass fiber, as it can be easily bent and is not as brittle as glass.

Another advantage of the plastic optical fiber is that with this system you do not need to have an independent channel inside the home to deploy it, since it is made of non-conductive materials of electricity, of clear plastic. In fact, you can share the routing of the electricity cables and avoid the dreaded chases.

In the end, what interests us users is the economy and the simplicity of installation. Unlike fibreglass that need connectors for more than 30 euros and professional installers, plastic fiber does not need them. It is only cut and plugged in, which makes its use and installation cheaper if you are a little handyman you could almost put it on without help.

The question is obliged: and why is it not used already? Because in recent years it has been improved until it meets all the aforementioned advantages to enter the home in optimal conditions. Telefónica is currently working on a plastic fiber research project aimed at making the most of the advantages of this technology.

Fiber optic networks in the home are already a reality, an economic and future solution. This future happens to be a combination of wired and wireless technologies, coexisting to offer the end-user full connectivity.

X-ray to copper and fiber options

Today, category 5 copper is widely used for residential environments, since it can be installed without the need for specialized equipment or personnel. But this type of cable is designed for 100Mbps, so to reach 1Gbps it is recommended to use category 6 copper cable, which is no longer so easy to install and is more expensive. In addition, you need a separate pipeline within the home for deployment.

However, fiber optic networks can be deployed over existing conduits, as they are not created or affected by electromagnetic interference and are not made of electrically conductive materials. Within the fiber optic options, if price and ease of installation are taken into account, the most suitable for a residential environment is plastic fiber optic.
